With Orbit36, we wanted to create something that references the laws of attraction. This typeface is profound, heavy weighted and larger than life. The letterforms feel like solid objects fused together by its intentional kerning as if each of the letters were bound by gravity or a magnetic force.

MyType (Behind the Type) – Typo-AG Rounded [G]
Out of all the letters in the alphabet we chose to highlight the [G] from Typo-AG Rounded. We found the [G] quite interesting because of its one straight edge, in an otherwise all rounded letterform. From this we were inspired to design a poster that is striking, black and highlights the [G], surrounded by hairline scratches. Typo-AG Rounded is a part of the Typo-AG family, which was designed along with VWmoblie as a part of typotherapy’s redesign of Ground Magazine.

Typo-AG Rounded [Heavy-95] is the final sibling of the Typo-AG Rounded family, designed to create an additional support to the display typography in typotherapy’s redesign of Ground Magazine. It’s extremely heavy and tightly kerned, almost balloon like, as if it’s floating freely on the page. This new dimension stimulated our creative juices to create this remarkable poster.

The entire Typo-AG family consists of: Typo-AG, Typo-AGA, Typo-AGB and Typo-AG Rounded. Weights include: Light, Demi, Bold and Heavy.

The classics…

In 2007, we were approached to produce the MyType show. Coincidentally, we were in the process of designing a series of posters dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of Helvetica, as a tribute to the iconic typeface. These two colour silk-screened posters became the inspiration to our methodology, were featured in the MyType show and received rave reviews.

In both Helvetica posters, to highlight the typeface, we designed a unique grid structure that reveals overlapping columns and colour. To dictate the relationship between the positive and negative space created by the letterforms, we further divided the grid into four sections, which also generates the visual shift.

The classics…

In addition to Helvetica, we worked with another classic typeface, Avant Garde. We used the same grid system as Neue Haas Grotesk to create this poster, juxtaposed to our excessive kerning of these timeless letterforms. This poster was also featured in the MyType show.

In the process of developing the Avant Garde poster, we experimented with inverting the letterforms dissected by the grid. This new version of the Avant Garde poster dubbed “The Remix” was interesting but unfortunately didn’t make the cut.

This poster essentially sums up all the type posters in the MyType show. It showcases the various poster designs and typeface concepts that where left on the drawing board. This poster is one of our favourites.
